Updated: Sep 13, 2023

The duration varies depending on the type of negative information:

  • Late Payments: Typically remain for 7 years from the date of the missed payment.

  • Bankruptcies: Chapter 7 bankruptcies can stay for up to 10 years, while Chapter 13 usually stays for 7 years.

  • Foreclosures: Can remain on your report for 7 years.

  • Collections: Stay for 7 years from the date the original debt went delinquent.

  • Hard Inquiries: Remain for 2 years but only impact your score for 12 months.

Remember, as time passes, the negative impact of these items on your credit score diminishes.
